We live in a world filled with uncertainty. If you feel dysregulated or unsure how to navigate life’s complexities, you're not alone. When our nervous system falls out of balance, we often develop unhealthy coping habits just to get through the day. It becomes difficult to avoid conversations or environments that feel more harmful than helpful.
Understanding Your Body’s Signals
Understanding what’s happening in your body can help reduce negative behaviors we tend to revert to when overwhelmed, such as excessive drinking, substance use, irritability, or shutting down emotionally. Often, we experience heightened emotionality. This isn’t something to be ashamed of; it’s your body signaling a need for care and attention.
Strong Emotions Aren’t the Enemy
Strong emotions show up both externally and internally. They help us adjust to our environment. However, when we don’t know how to support our nervous system, we may respond in ways that hinder our growth. The goal is not to suppress these feelings but to learn how to move through them with intention. Even if you feel isolated in this experience, you are not alone. We are all doing our best to survive, and hopefully thrive, in this complex world.

The Four Key Pillars of Nervous System Regulation
There are four key pillars that help regulate the nervous system:
Nutrition
Movement
Conscious breathing
Sleep
Each of these pillars supports the body’s ability to return to a parasympathetic state. This state is calm and grounded, allowing healing and restoration to occur. Below are some effective daily self-preservation strategies to guide you. (Note: this is not an exhaustive list.)
🌿 Avoid Doom Scrolling
In today’s digital age, we were never meant to process such a significant amount of information at once. To protect your mental space:
Take in only what you can emotionally handle.
Let go of content that doesn't serve you.
Limit social media use to 20-minute increments throughout the day.
Engage positively with content to help shift your algorithm and mood.
🤝 Create Community
Human connection plays a crucial role in emotional well-being. To cultivate a supportive environment:
Spend quality time with family and friends.
Get outside; sunlight and nature act as medicine for the soul.
Connect with like-minded individuals who support your growth.
🔕 Reduce Overstimulation
Overstimulation can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. To create a calming environment:
Turn off unnecessary notifications.
Use focus apps to limit distractions.
Power down the TV and consider journaling instead.
Incorporate aromatherapy, soft lighting, or soothing sounds.
Meditate or pray; stillness can be a powerful reset.
💪 Preserve Your Temple
Taking care of your physical health can profoundly impact your emotional well-being. Be mindful of:
Exercising in ways that feel good for your body.
Eating nourishing and balanced meals.
Staying hydrated to maintain overall health.
🗣️ Engage in Therapy or Support Groups
Therapy and support groups aren't signs of weakness; they are acts of strength and clarity. To find the right support:
Choose a therapist or support community that aligns with your needs.
Explore their background and approach to treatment.
Trust the therapy process. Remember, healing isn’t linear, but it is possible. For help finding a therapist, check out Black Therapists Matter.
Building Resilience and Emotional Muscle
Essentially, we all want to navigate challenges with grace and resilience. Part of achieving this involves co-regulation, which means sharing a safe, emotionally available, and trusting presence in a community. These strategies are not solely about surviving; they're about building emotional muscle.
Reducing the sense of overwhelm when facing uncomfortable emotions and circumstances is essential. So, when the world feels heavy, Choose you. Choose your peace. Choose to fight the good fight without sacrificing your mental health.
Here’s to a happy nervous system!
