FAQ for finding a therapist

What is Black Therapists Matter?

Black Therapists Matter is an online directory and community designed to help people find Black mental health and wellness professionals who meet their needs.

Why should I use this directory?

Finding a therapist who understands your lived experience can make it easier to feel seen, heard, and supported in your healing journey. Our directory makes it easier to locate therapists who identify as Black and provide culturally responsive care.

How do I find the right therapist?

Finding the right therapist is a personal process, and it’s okay to take your time. Start by considering what matters most to you, such as your therapist’s specialties, rates, therapy style, location, availability, and whether you prefer in-person or online therapy.

As you browse the directory, select your country and state to ensure they cover your area. Be sure to read therapist's profiles carefully and look for someone whose experience and approach feel like a good fit. Many therapists offer a free consultation, which can be a great first step to see if the connection feels comfortable.

Remember, it’s okay to try more than one therapist. The most important part of therapy is feeling safe, supported, and understood.

Are all therapists licensed?

Therapists listed in the directory are licensed mental health professionals OR supervised pre-licensed clinicians, depending on their level of training and credentials.

How do I contact a therapist?

Each therapist profile includes contact information and instructions for scheduling. You can reach out directly to the therapist whose services best fit your needs.

Does Black Therapists Matter provide therapy?
