The Therapist Plug!

I am Pametria Dominise Brown, a licensed clinical social worker and therapist with over 15 years of mental health experience.  As the Founder and Executive Director of Black Therapist Matter, I am proud the be the "Head Therapist in Charge". Black Therapists Matter is a global directory and community-centered movement founded to increase access to culturally responsive mental health care and strengthen Black led healing systems.

I launched this directory on June 19th, 2024, to increase visibility of Black therapist across the United States so that the Black community could find us easier. As a mental health leader and public speaker, I realized that people were often looking to me as a resource for mental health services because they did not know where to start. The people were looking for Black therapist, and many Black therapists were struggling to find the people, so I created an innovative way of bringing them together. This brand has grown beyond my initial vision and has expanded to multiple countries, educational offerings and a full mental health apparel line. while being unapologetically Black AF!

My Story

Born and raised in BIG Memphis, not the little one!! At an early age my mother, Pamela Brown, stressed the importance of educating, advocating, and empowering others as well as the value of building something for yourself. She was also intentional about instilling cultural pride, community outreach and owning your BLACKNESS, in my sister and I. Those principles and sense of pride have traveled with me throughout my life and have been included in every book, workshop, community event, framework and brand that I have created. My private practice and my business are both undeniable in who my target audience and I make no apologies for that. Black clinicians represent less than 10% of the field, so I have intentionally allowed my bold personality, style, and colorful personality to show up in our branding. This platform is about visibility and encouraging Black therapist to step away from their desk and let our people know we are here! Representation in mental health matters and I truly believe that people shouldn't have to mask or code switch in therapy!

Being the Executive Director of Black Therapists Matter, allows me to operate within my passions by advocating for representation, education, collaboration, mental fortitude and empowerment for MY people.  workshops, media initiatives, and community programming that center wellness, prevention, and sustainability for helping professionals. My ability to bridge clinical expertise with community engagement allows me to impact individuals at multiple levels, from direct therapeutic support to large-scale mental health awareness efforts like the Black Therapist Matter directory, my "a whole Black therapist" apparel line and my upcoming documentary on suicide prevention in the Black community.

My work reflects innovation, cultural pride, and a deep commitment to mentoring emerging professionals and creating pathways for Black therapists to thrive as leaders, educators, and entrepreneurs that are culturally centered. Being a Black therapist is not enough; we must also be alignment with recognizing the historical context that has impacted our community's hesitation and resistance to medical care to prevent further harm. I am BECAUSE of my ancestors!
